Welcome to Talking Plant Protein. I am Nicole Astra and this is Industry News.
The supply chain is under new scrutiny responding to the frenzy of investors moving into the plant-based market. Nearly every food category is taking advantage of alternative proteins including: meat, dairy, sports nutrition and even pet food. And the question on everyone’s mind is how will the supply of ingredients keep up.
Mathieu Baudouin head of global product group for the Americas at Roquette says: The global plant-based market is a 3.3 billion dollar industry. It is fairly young, high-growing and has not yet reached maturity. In 2054, it’s expected that a third of all protein supply will be plant-based.
Years ago, Roquette anticipated this growing demand and in 2017 they broke ground on a more than 500 million dollar facility in Portage la Prairie, Manitoba, Canada. When the facility reaches full production capacity, it will produce 125,000 tons of yellow peas annually.
Bringing the right solutions to market will include expanding manufacturing and controlling and mastering the value chain. Suppliers like Roquette are creating and enabling agricultural protocols with farmer partners, not only to ensure adequate supply, but also to obtain unadulterated product.
I’m Nicole Astra and that’s your Industry News.
