Welcome to Talking Plant Protein. I'm Sarah Baker and these are this week's trending topics. We've all heard of companies appointing C-E-Os, C-B-Os, and C-S-Os, but what about a C-M-O? Popular plant-based chicken brand, Quorn, recently announced their partnership with Drew Barrymore as she joins the team as their first ever chief mom officer. Barrymore says that she looks forward to working with the brand to create more affordable, accessible, and delicious options within the plant-based industry. The company recently announced that, in addition to the collaboration, they'll be launching new products in the fall, including Quorn meatless chicken cutlets and Quorn meatless chicken wings. Soy, pea, wheat, and canola. What do they have in common? They're all plants that we typically see being made into protein, but there's a newcomer to the plant-based protein scene, and that is sunflower, the third largest oil seed crop in the world.
After a recent co-investment from Protein Industries Canada, food tech company Burcon NutraScience, they're both developing protein isolates from the seeds with over 90% purity. They claim that the new protein has a neutral color and bland flavor making it suitable for a wide variety of applications, especially those that require a delicate flavor profile. A newcomer in the plant protein scene, Crump, a hemp based protein is preparing to go to production. The company launching this new product, the Naturist, met their fundraising goal through an Indiegogo page in just 36 hours earlier this month. The page is still active as they continue to raise money to accelerate their launch, providing backers with rewards such as free products, merch, and even a three day biohackers retreat. The new product is made up of two star ingredients, hemp flour and peas, and promises to contain no preservatives, allergens, G-M-O, or soy. From Talking Plant Protein, I'm Sarah Baker, and those are this week's trending topics.
